TU Wien Informatics Awards is a celebration of exceptional achievements across all research areas. These awards spotlight outstanding student accomplishments on all study levels, highlighting them within the entire TU Wien community. With the Best Master Thesis Award, the Best Dissertation Award, the certification of our Bachelor-with-Honors graduates, and our Siemens Awards for Excellence recipients, the ceremony embodies the full student experience and underscores their vital role at TU Wien Informatics. The event is not just a gathering for the faculty, friends, and families – it’s a chance to exchange ideas and ignite new academic pursuits.

TU Wien Informatics Awards is a follow-up to the former “Epilog” award show, which was established in 2005 and featured the Distinguished Young Alumn Award and the Best Poster Award. With the new event, the faculty not only hosts new awards but also a ceremony based on a joint celebration within a supportive and visionary community.

The Awards

Best Master Thesis Award

The Best Master Thesis Award is awarded once a year. Nominations of excellent master’s theses from all research units are included in the jury process, led by Margrit Gelautz. In their evaluation, the jury considers both the methodological and substantive aspects of each thesis, including the importance of the subject, the originality of the work, its structure, the quality of the scholarship, writing, and presentation. In addition to the winner, two runner-up prizes are awarded. The prize is endowed with €1500, runner-ups receive €750 each.

Best Dissertation Award

The Best Dissertation Award honors the faculty’s best doctoral thesis once a year after a strict jury selection. The jury is led by Andreas Steininger. This award recognizes a dissertation that stands out for its innovative research, intellectual depth, and impactful contribution to its field. The assessment includes related publications, practical or industry use, and field recognition. The prize is endowed with €2000.

Siemens Awards for Excellence

Together with Siemens Austria, we honor the best female students of the year for outstanding achievements in their studies. Since 2014 and in generous cooperation with Siemens AG Austria, outstanding female students of both bachelor and master programs are honored with the annual Siemens Award for Excellence. The grant, endowed with €1000, is given to the best female students of the academic year. Students do not apply for this award since the sole criteria are progress in studies, weighted grade average, and acquired ECTS. With the award, we not only recognize these outstanding students and their achievements but also seek to create role models for girls and fellow female students.

Siemens is a pioneer in many areas of women’s advancement: Women have been trained in classic male professions in the apprentice program since 1977. In recruiting, special consideration is given to a balance of female technicians and young female employees with potential.
