Curriculum

Semester overview

The first semester is dedicated to getting around the foundations of Quantum Information Science and Technology. There are three modules:

  • Quantum Physics: Basic Concepts and Foundations, where you’ll engage with core concepts of quantum physics like quantum superposition, entanglement and interference.
  • Quantum Technology Devices: Techniques and Platforms, which gives you an introduction to the physical platforms and techniques that underly quantum technologies, such as single photons, integrated photonics, and matter waves.
  • Quantum Computing, Complexity Theory and Algorithms, which provides an introduction to the fundamentals of quantum computing, complexity theory and algorithmics. You’ll learn about core concepts and techniques required to program quantum computers.

Over the course of the second and third semester, you’ll take advanced courses of the foundational modules to deepen your knowledge of core concepts, methods, and experimental techniques of Quantum Information Science and Technology. You’ll be able to choose from specialized courses and seminars and shape your curriculum according to your own interests. The module Research Methods explores current research questions and helps you to develop the experimental and theoretical-mathematical skills for your master’s thesis. A well-balanced set of electives and soft skills enable you to deepen your education in Quantum Information Science and Technology and beyond.

The focus in the fourth semester lies on developing and writing up your master’s thesis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Follow the instructions on the web page Admission to a Master Degree Programme. Please submit your application in time, as the admission procedure may take two months or even longer.
The prerequisite for admission to the master’s degree program “Quantum Information Science and Technology” is the completion of an eligible bachelor’s or diploma program at a post-secondary (domestic or foreign) educational institution. A degree program is eligible if you have acquired basic knowledge and skills in Linear Algebra, Analysis, Statistics and Programming. Definitely qualified for admission are the bachelor degree programs Technical Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Informatics, Computer Engineering or Technical Mathematics from TU Wien.
We evaluate all of your submitted documents, with a particular focus on the transcript of records of your bachelor’s program.
That depends on your bachelor’s degree. Decisions about whether you’ll be able to enroll will be made by the dean of academic affairs and on a case-by-case basis.
If you have a bachelor’s degree in Technical Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Informatics, Computer Engineering or Technical Mathematics from TU Wien, you may be admitted without conditions. If you have a bachelor’s degree in one of these disciplines from another university, you may have to complete supplementary examinations to qualify for admission. Decisions about whether you’ll be able to enroll and about supplementary courses will be made by the dean of academic affairs and on a case-by-case basis.

For German, none. The program is entirely in English. If an application form asks for your German skills, this is only because of other study programs; your answer does not affect your chances of getting admitted.

For English, proficiency on Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required.

You only need to provide a certificate of your proficiency if you have not graduated in English on Level B2 of the CEFR from an Austrian or foreign secondary school. We accept the following certificates as a demonstration of your proficiency:

  • TOEFL (iBT), minimum requirement 87 Points
  • IELTS (academic), Overall Band Score of at least 6,5
  • Cambridge Certifcate (CAE, minimum requirement 45 Points, or FCE, minimum requirement 160 Points)
Yes, your master’s thesis must be written and submitted in English.
