About

The scientific areas of our unit are Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). We conduct basic and application oriented research in a wide range of fields associated with VR/AR.

AR, VR and MR technologies and systems are more and more used in different applications: industry (virtual prototyping), entertainment (videogames), art (cultural heritage), medicine (rehabilitation) and education (training). The objective is to provide the most immersive experience to users when they interact with a Virtual Environment. Our motivation is to improve AR/VR/MR systems by considering the whole interaction loop: we consider multiple user inputs to provide efficient interactions, but also consider multiple sensory feedback outputs to improve users’ immersion in VEs.

We focus in particular on the following research areas:

  • 3D interaction in virtual environments (locomotion, haptic feedback, avatars)
  • 3D large-scale collaborative systems with multiple users: AR/VR/MR systems for training, education, rehabilitation and other application areas
  • Rendering and viewing in MR systems, including tracking, motion capture, 3D reconstruction of VEs, high quality rendering for AR etc.
  • Human perception in virtual environments e.g. spatial understanding, human motion, embodiment and agency.

In the past we conducted projects on industrial high precision tracking solutions, physical rehabilitation, safety of fire fighters, high school science education in VR, prosthetics, and many more. Please see the list of current and past projects. In addition to basic research projects, we focus on innovative applications of VR/AR technology which are beneficial to society.

The research Unit Virtual and Augmented Reality is part of the Institute of Visual Computing and Human-Centered Technology.
