A Min Tjoa Receives Highest Austrian Decoration for Science

On 15 June 2022, A Min Tjoa, professor emeritus at TU Wien Informatics, was honored with the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art (Österreichisches Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse).

A Min Tjoa

Tjoa received his Ph.D. in computer science at Johannes Kepler University in Linz in 1979. He has been a full professor for software technology at TU Wien since 1994, after being a full professor at the University of Vienna for information systems (1988-1994) and informatics (1982-1988). He was head of the former Institute of Software Technology and Interactive Systems at TU Wien Informatics. Tjoa published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles in his various research fields. His main research interests lie in data warehousing, business intelligence, big data and text mining, semantic web, cyber-security, linked open data and environmental informatics, ICT and sustainability. Since 2008, he has been the Austrian delegate for the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and served as an UN-CSTD chairperson (2018-2019) and as vice-chairperson (2015-2021). He was the president of the Austrian Computer Society from 1999 to 2003. In 2006, he co-founded the research center for information security SBA Research. Moreover, Tjoa is chairman of the International Federation of Information Processing TC8 Working Group on Enterprise Information Systems. He is a member of the senate at the Christian Doppler Foundation.

Tjoa is a promotor of the internationalization of education and research in informatics. He was president of the ASEAN European Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET) (2016-2017) and Austrian National Coordinator (2014-2019). He held guest professorships at the University of Zurich, the Technical University in Lausanne, Czech Technical University in Prague, the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, and the University of Kyushu, among others. In 2011, he was awarded the Honorary Doctoral degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Czech University of Technology in Prague for his research and the Honorary Professor title from Hue University in Vietnam. He was a member of the Council of Doctoral Studies in Mathematics, Informatics, and Telecommunication (Conseil de l’ Ecole Doctorate Mathématique, Informatique et Telecommunications de Toulouse), which covers all universities in the Toulouse area from 2012 to 2016.

The Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art (Österreichisches Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse) is the highest federal award granted by the Austrian state for scientific or artistic achievements. This exceptional distinction is awarded exclusively “to persons in Austria and abroad who have gained general recognition and an outstanding name through particularly high-level achievements in science or art”. A Min Tjoa is the second computer scientist in Austria who is bestowed with the highest honors of the Austrian state. In 2005, Heinz Zemanek from TU Wien Informatics received the Decoration of Honor for his outstanding work.
