TU Wien Awards Honorary Professorship to Michael Bronstein
AI pioneer Michael Bronstein is being honored for his groundbreaking research at the intersection of AI and the life sciences.

We’re delighted to announce that TU Wien awarded an honorary professorship to Michael Bronstein to honor his extensive contributions in the fields of artificial intelligence and machine learning!
Michael Bronstein is a world-leading expert in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning, with a career that bridges groundbreaking academic research and entrepreneurial ventures. Currently, he is the Scientific Director of AI at the Aithyra Institute, which is funded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung. AITHYRA presents a unique opportunity to strengthen research, teaching, and regional innovation in AI, as Michael Bronstein brings his internationally recognized expertise in geometric deep learning and his ability to connect theory with real-world impact to Vienna, advancing medical informatics, and shaping the city’s role as a global hub for AI in the life sciences.
Michael Bronstein is also DeepMind Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Oxford. Before joining Oxford, he was Head of Graph Learning Research at Twitter (now X), and his academic journey has included a professorship at Imperial College London and visiting appointments at some of the world’s most renowned research institutions, including Stanford, MIT, and Harvard. Michael Bronstein has been recognized with major international awards for his research, such as the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Silver Medal for pioneering methods in graph deep learning and the Prix de la Fondation Dalle Molle for his contributions to misinformation detection.
Michael Bronstein received his master’s degree and his PhD with distinction from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Between 2017-2020, he was a Fellow at the Technical University of Munich as a Rudolf Diesel Fellow, a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard, and a short-term scholar at Princeton, all three prestigious Institutes for Advanced Study. His contributions to AI and machine learning have been recognized through numerous honors and awards, including an EPSRC Turing AI World Leading Research Fellowship, the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal. He is also the recipient of multiple ERC grants, as well as Google Faculty Research Awards and Amazon Research Awards.
Michael Bronstein is a Member of the Academia Europaea and a Fellow of IEEE, IAPR, BCS, and ELLIS. He is also an ACM Distinguished Speaker and has been named a World Economic Forum Young Scientist. Beyond academia, Bronstein has a strong track record as a tech entrepreneur: He has co-founded several startups, including Videocites, and Fabula AI, which was acquired by Twitter (now X) in 2019.
