In the last decade, the computational power of GPUs developed rapidly and exceeded Moore’s law. A high number of cores, wide SIMD parallelism and hyperthreading result in enormous peak performance. However, exploiting this power requires novel algorithms and data structures. Since GPU architectures also have a big impact on future CPUs, many of these novel techniques will also become relevant for non-graphics applications, from high performance computing to data bases. In the talk, we will report on the deployment of GPUs for various applications, from traditional rendering to object retrieval.
Since 2002, Marc Stamminger is professor for computer science and visualization at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Before, he worked as a computer graphics researcher at MPI Informatik, Saarbrücken and INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, and was a lecturer at the Bauhaus-University in Weimar. His research focus is interactive rendering and global illumination, mainly on modern GPU architectures.
