DC Resilient Embedded Systems: Call for Application

As a third cohort of students is scheduled to start in the winter term October 2020 in the DC-RES, our next call will open on November 21, 2019. Please check this page for up-dated information! A central goal of TU Wien Informatics is the sustainable increase of the proportion of women in academic staff and different measures are taken to support women. Therefore we explicitly encourage female candidates to apply. Preference will be given when equally qualified. The call will be open until March 24, 2020, 23:59 (CET)

Requirements

The prerequisite for becoming a PhD student is a finished master degree or equivalent, preferably with distinction, in the following fields:

  • Computer Science, Informatics
  • Computer Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering or Information Technology
Further fields of studies may be taken into account if the student has a similar qualification but from a distinct field, e.g., a major in mathematics with a minor in one of the above mentioned fields, and is in general well-suited for the position in question.

The application deadline is March 24, 2020, 23:59 (CET).

Selection Process & Schedule

After a first round of review, selected candidates will be invited for a hearing, in which they get an opportunity to present their research plans and to get in touch with potential advisors. The hearings will be scheduled for May 4 - May 6, 2020 and attendance is mandatory (costs for the travel to Vienna will be covered within reasonable limits). A final decision will be made by mid of May 2020. The DC Resilient Embedded Systems for successful applicants of the third call starts in October 2020. The successful candidates will receive a 30 h employment from the hosting institution (TU Wien or FH Technikum - €30,077.25 gross salary per year.

University Rank

Please check the ranking for your Master university in the QS World University Rankings (area Computer Science) at QS University Rankings and provide the result. Informatics at TU Wien for instance is ranked in group 51-100 in 2019.

GPA

In the field GPA please indicate your Grade Point Average. As the grading system might vary a lot from country to country, please also indicate the best and the worst possible grade.

Research Area

Please indicate your research area/interests (keywords). You are free to choose up to 5 keywords or topics here that best describe your interests.

Your Preferred Supervisor

A list of potential supervisors can be found in the drop-down list in the submission form and further up on this page. You may want to check who of them best matches your envisioned research field. However, you may as well leave this open. Please also refer to TU Wien Informatics Research Foci and FH Technikum Wien.

Publications

Only reviewed publications! Please give the number of your reviewed publications (journals or published conference proceedings); in the upload section you will be asked for the publication list.

References

Please fill in the dates of two referees, whom you will ask to send us a recommendation letter for you. Please note that it is your responsibility to take care that we receive the reviews via email.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation have to be provided. At least one of your referees should have a scientific background. The letters of recommendation should be sent by the referees via E-Mail to DC-ResilientEmbeddedSystems@informatik.tuwien.ac.at. In the subject of this e-mail DC RESILIENT EMBEDDED SYSTEMS and your family name should be mentioned. Referees should use this template.

  1. Academic degrees
    Submit a scan of your degree certificates (Bachelor degree and higher) of a post-secondary education institution including course transcript. The submitted documents should be issued by the universities in English language. Information about the grading system must be included. Note that applicants are expected to have obtained a master's degree with distinction. Students who will not be able to submit their degree certificate by the application deadline have to provide a statement by their thesis supervisor declaring that the student will complete his/her degree during summer 2020. Important: The master degree certificate or an equivalent official document from your university is a precondition for being employed and admitted!
  2. Motivation letter
    Please explain why you would like to join the DC Resilient Embedded Systems. Please also indicate the research area you are interested in.
  3. Curriculum Vitae
  4. Summary of Your Diploma/Master Thesis
    A short summary of the thesis in English (maximum 2000 characters) structured as follows: motivations of the thesis, methods of the investigations, final results.
  5. Research proposal
    Please outline (in about 2 - 3 pages) the research vision/plan you would like to follow and the research questions you would like to address in your PhD. Knowing your interests is important for us in order to identify potential advisors and to agree on a PhD topic together with your advisor. In case your application is selected for the shortlist in the first selection round, you will be invited to a hearing and asked to present and motivate the research vision you have submitted.
