The Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research honored Thomas Depian for his exceptional academic achievements.
On November 21, 2024, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) honored the best diploma and master’s degrees for the academic year 2023/2024 across Austrian universities. Thomas Depian received one such award out of approximately 16,000 graduates.
The Würdigungspreis – Staatspreis für die besten Diplom- und Masterabschlüsse (State Prize for best Master Graduates), endowed with 3,000 Euros, is highly competitive. Nominations are coming from 74 higher education institutions, including public & private universities, universities of applied sciences, and teacher training colleges. Elmar Pichl, a representative from the Ministry, stood in for Federal Minister Martin Polaschek and presented the award to 55 winners from all over Austria.
Thomas Depian completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degree at TU Wien Informatics, where he was also part of the Bachelor with Honors Program. It was during this time that he started to enjoy doing research on graph drawing and computational geometry problems. Following this interest also led to his award-winning master’s thesis on “Grouping and ordering constraints in boundary labeling”, under the supervision of Martin Nöllenburg. Part of the results of his thesis are published as a paper in the proceedings of the 35th International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation (ISAAC’24). Thomas is currently working as a project assistant and predoc researcher the Research Unit Algorithms and Complexity under the supervision of Robert Ganian and Martin Nöllenburg.
Congratulations!
