Public Lecture by Grigore Burdea
Join us on September 30 for the Guest Lecture “Virtual Rehabilitation at the Crossroads” by Grigore Burdea!

About
Grigore Burdea graduated as a valedictorian from the Technical University of Bucharest, after which he received a Doctorate in Applied Sciences from New York University. At the start of his Academic career, he invented and patented the first haptic glove for interactions with virtual environments. This haptic glove was used in the first tele-rehabilitation experiment between Stanford University, which is on the West Coast of the US, and Rutgers University, which is on the East Coast. The novelty of this research (back in 1990) led the White House to cite it as an example of federally funded research.
In the following years, Professor Burdea established the first International Society on Virtual Rehabilitation, as well as the first international congress dedicated to this emerging scientific domain. In recognition of his scientific contributions, the IEEE awarded him the “Virtual Reality Career Award,” given to only one person each year worldwide. He has published over 160 scientific papers and several books, which have been cited more than 22,000 times. Among these is Virtual Reality Technology, with the 2024 edition including a description of research by the Technical University of Vienna on the use of VR in education.
