Georg Gottlob receives Preis der Stadt Wien
On November 27, Georg Gottlob was honored with a Prize of the City of Vienna, which was presented by the city’s councilor for Culture and Science.
We are delighted to announce that on November 27, Georg Gottlob received the Preis der Stadt Wien (Prize of the City of Vienna) in the category Mathematics, Computer Science, the Natural Sciences, and Technology for his academic achievements in the field of computer science. This year, the prizes were presented to awardees by the City’s Councilor for Culture and Science Veronica Kaup-Hasler, at Vienna’s city hall. The prizes of the City of Vienna honor extraordinary achievements in the fields of architecture, the fine arts, media art, literature, journalism, music, the sciences, and education, and they are endowed with 10,000 Euros.
Georg Gottlob says that he has dedicated much time and enthusiasm to the supervision of PhD students, and that he has learned a lot from them. He used to scientifically interact with several of his academic teachers as well, and out of both these experiences, his motto, “My students are my teachers, and my teachers are my students”, emerged, which he also used to display on his homepage. Another slogan cast and propagated by Georg Gottlob is: “Computer Science is the continuation of Logic by other means”. It turned out that this slogan was independently created by the well-known Dutch logician Johan van Benthem, which, according to Georg Gottlob, just demonstrates that this is a very natural statement.
About Georg Gottlob
Georg Gottlob earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from TU Wien in 1981. Following academic appointments in Milan, Genoa, and Stanford, he was named a full professor of Informatics at TU Wien in 1988. In 2006, he accepted a position at Oxford University while maintaining strong ties to TU Wien, where he is now an Emeritus Professor. Between 2006 and 2011, he served as the Chair of Computing Science at Oxford University and subsequently assumed the Chair of Informatics in January 2012. Currently, Georg is a Professorial Fellow at St John’s College, Oxford, and holds a chaired professorship at the University of Calabria in Italy.
An esteemed scholar, Georg Gottlob has contributed over 250 scientific articles to computational logic, database theory, and artificial intelligence and authored a textbook on logic programming and databases. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Wittgenstein Award from the FWF, the ERC Advanced Investigators Grant, and the Ada Lovelace Medal from the British Computer Society. He is recognized as an ACM Fellow, an ECCAI Fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a member of the Austrian, German, and European Academies of Sciences. In addition to his research contributions, Georg Gottlob is actively involved in various advisory boards and serves on the editorial boards of JCSS (The Journal of Computer and System Sciences) and TheoretiCS, demonstrating his commitment to advancing excellence in research. He has previously served on the editorial boards of JACM and CACM.
