The federal state Burgenland honors Gernot Steindl’s dissertation on the digitization of industrial energy systems.

Burgenland Higher Education Award Goes to Gernot Steindl

The jury’s decision in the scientific and pedagogical dissertations category was unanimous. Gernot Steindl, PostDoc Researcher at the Research Unit for Automation Systems at TU Wien Informatics, excelled with his dissertation “Digital Twinning for Industrial Energy Systems Utilizing Semantic Web Technologies”. Steindl finished his thesis supervised by Wolfgang Kastner in 2022, providing a technology-independent architecture framework for creating digital twins and their services in industrial energy systems. These digital twins are a key technology for industrial cyber-physical systems and invaluable for energy providers in times of crisis.

At the award ceremony on November 10, 2022, Burgenland’s Education Minister, Daniela Winkler, emphasized: “This year, the Burgenland Higher Education Award once again successfully reflects the range of outstanding achievements in Burgenland’s scientific and educational fields. The quality of what is achieved here in research and teaching is decisive for the success of our universities and the entire region.”

About the Burgenland Higher Education Award

The Burgenland Conference of Higher Education Institutions presents the Burgenland Higher Education Award in two categories: It is intended to stimulate outstanding achievements in 1) scientific or pedagogical as well as 2) artistic fields in Burgenland (especially cooperations) and to make them visible to a broad public. The award for the scientific or pedagogical category is divided into bachelor’s and master’s theses or dissertations.

The Burgenland Conference of Higher Education Institutions was founded in 2013 and consists of the University of Applied Sciences Burgenland, the Private University of Teacher Education Burgenland, the Joseph Haydn Conservatory, and the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Oberschützen Institute). It is an independent platform of the universities in Burgenland, non-partisan and non-denominational. The aim is to promote networking and cooperation between these universities and thus enable a better exchange between the institutions. This opens up perspectives and strengthens Burgenland as an educational region.

Submission for the Burgenland University Award 2023 is possible until the end of May 2023 – more info here.
