The Faculty of Informatics starts with an international PhD School of Informatics in October 2009.

The Faculty of Informatics of the Vienna University of Technology starts with an international PhD School of Informatics in October 2009. The PhD School is funded by TU Vienna, the City of Vienna as well as private sponsors. Each year a maximum of 15 scholarships will be awarded to national as well as international students.

The PhD-School’s curriculum covers the five main research areas of the Faculty of Informatics. “TU Vienna aims at positioning this PhD School of Informatics at a high level of excellence within the international community”, says Prof. Gerald Steinhardt, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics. The school is designed to invite renowned international guest lecturers as well as to integrate public and private organizations in order to facilitate long term cooperations.

All courses are held in English. The PhD School is open for national and international students with an objective of a 50% share of non-German speaking students. The PhD Programme addresses students from Western European countries and North America as well as from Eastern Europe and Asia. Furthermore, a women’s quota of at least 40% (averaged over 3 years) is intended. A competitive selection procedure will ensure a high quality level among scholars.

“A curriculum for doctoral studies of this kind is atypical for Austrian Universities”, explains Prof. Hannes Werthner, Director of the PhD School of Informatics. “In Austria, doctoral students traditionally have fewer courses with less curriculum structure. Our PhD curriculum contains more courses, which are structured around the faculty’s five mail research areas.”

The full-time programme of the PhD School is designed for three years. During the first two years students have to follow courses, whereas in the third year they exclusively work on their PhD thesis. In addition, students will be integrated into research groups at the beginning of the second year at the latest.

The PhD School of Informatics starts in October 2009, application deadline is May 25th 2009.
